Biography

Nia was born on October 5, 1993 in Jakarta, Indonesia. Growing up, she has always been interested in food and its roles in the body. During her high school years, she volunteered for catering service in church in which she was in charged of preparing monthly free lunch the homeless. From there she realized that money has always been the main reason for not choosing to consume proper diet. Since many of Indonesians are financially incapable, they cannot afford a balanced diet and so, getting the consequence of being malnourished. 

On contrary, food industries started to focused more on producing large-scale food that can be sold at low prices in the markets. Unfortunately, the down side for this is that actually these processed foods contain much less nutrients than they did a decade ago. Nia believes that the quality of food is much more important than the quantity of food. She is aware with the fact that having a diet that relies primarily on excess junk food or processed food can lead not only to obesity, but other chronic diseases that are life threatening.

Therefore, her goal after obtaining her bachelor's degree in nutrition and dietetics is to be able to advise the public about the growing importance of the role of food in health. She hopes that being a dietitian can give her the chance to consult different types of individuals and improve their choices of diet. She believes that although health is not something that people can buy, it is something that people can invest as early as possible. 

During her free time, Nia enjoys playing the piano, dancing, browsing through the Internet, and spending time with her friends and family. After graduating from UC Berkeley this May 2014, she will go back to Indonesia where she will apply for jobs in hospitals as a Clinical Dietitian.
